Meaning: `bundle, truss of hay' (Cratin., Theoc.); 'δάφνη, ἥν ἱστῶσι \<πρὸ\> τῶν πυλῶν' H., `place, where the reed is closely grown with the roots' (Thphr.).

Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]

Etymology: The formation is curious (cf. Schwyzer 465, Chantraine Formation 366); no explanation. Acc. to Persson Beitr. 1, 159 f. (s. also 2, 942) together with κῶμος, κώμη, Lith. kamuolỹs `clew' etc. to IE. *kem- `press together' (Pok. 555), s. on κημός. - The suffix is clearly Pre-Greek.
